Five marinas near Savannah's Historic District offer on-site fuel docks with diesel and gasoline: IGY Savannah Harbor Marina (directly across the river from downtown, reachable by free ferry), Savannah Marina on Turner's Creek, Isle of Hope Marina on the Intracoastal Waterway, Safe Harbor Bahia Bleu in Thunderbolt, and Bull River Marina on Wilmington Island. All five sit within a short boat ride or drive of River Street and downtown Savannah.

Savannah's Historic District sits right on the Savannah River, which means boaters get a rare treat: you can cruise in off the Intracoastal Waterway, tie up for the night, and be standing on cobblestone streets under live oaks within minutes. Whether you're passing through on the ICW, running down from Hilton Head, or planning a weekend on the water, here's a rundown of the Savannah marinas closest to downtown — all with fuel dock access — so you can plan your stop with confidence.
Closest option to downtown. This is the newest marina in the mix, sitting directly across the Savannah River from the Historic District, next to the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa on Hutchinson Island. A free, dog-friendly ferry runs roughly every 20–30 minutes to River Street, so you can be walking River Street within about 15 minutes of tying up.
Tucked at the mouth of Turner's Creek, just off the ICW on Wilmington Island, Savannah Marina puts you a short drive from downtown rather than a walk — but you trade that for a quieter setting and a restaurant right on-site.
If you want history on both sides of the dock line, this is it. Isle of Hope Marina sits inside its own National Register Historic District, right next to Wormsloe Plantation, and is one of the more sheltered stops on this list — popular with long-distance cruisers running the ICW.
Located in the village of Thunderbolt, a few miles up the Wilmington River from downtown, Bahia Bleu is part of the nationwide Safe Harbor network — a solid choice if you're already a Safe Harbor member or want resort-style amenities.
Out on the eastern side of Wilmington Island toward Tybee, Bull River Marina is a good stop if you're bouncing between the historic district and the beach — and boaters here consistently mention it as one of the better prices in town for fuel.
Not every stop needs a fuel dock. Eastern Wharf, the newer riverfront district just east of the Historic District, has its own public dock right on the Savannah River — a convenient spot to tie up for a few hours if you're headed to dinner, the shops, or the riverfront green space at the Park at Eastern Wharf, without needing a full-service marina stay. It's also right next to Upper East River, Savannah's new riverfront residential community — worth a look if you're already thinking about keeping a boat here long-term. (See our guide to Upper East River for more.)
Marina | Closest To | Fuel Type | Distance to Historic District |
|---|---|---|---|
Downtown (via free ferry) | Diesel & gas | ~5 min walk + ferry ride | |
Wilmington Island / ICW | Diesel & gas | Short drive | |
Isle of Hope | Diesel & gas | ~15 min drive | |
Thunderbolt | Diesel & gas | ~5.3 miles | |
Wilmington Island | Diesel & ethanol-free gas | A few minutes' drive |
Once you're fueled up and docked, Savannah's real magic is what's within easy reach on the water. A few favorites worth working into your trip:
A word of caution from locals: Georgia's coast has some of the biggest tidal swings on the East Coast — up to 8 feet — so check tide charts before you commit to a sandbar landing, and keep a chartplotter or navigation app running in the shallower creeks.
A few practical notes for anyone routing a trip through Savannah:
Savannah's mix of downtown convenience and quieter creek-side marinas means there's a good fit whether you want to step off the boat straight onto River Street or post up somewhere calmer with a short drive into town. Check each marina's site or give them a call for current fuel pricing and slip availability before you shove off.
What is the closest marina to Savannah's Historic District?
IGY Savannah Harbor Marina is the closest, sitting directly across the Savannah River from downtown. A free ferry runs to River Street roughly every 20–30 minutes, putting you in the Historic District within about 15 minutes of docking.
Can you buy diesel and gas at marinas near downtown Savannah?
Yes. IGY Savannah Harbor Marina, Savannah Marina, Isle of Hope Marina, Safe Harbor Bahia Bleu, and Bull River Marina all operate fuel docks offering both marine diesel and gasoline.
Do I need a reservation to dock in Savannah?
It's strongly recommended, especially in spring and fall when ICW traffic peaks. Slips at the marinas closest to the Historic District fill up quickly during these travel windows.
What VHF channel do Savannah marinas monitor?
Most monitor Channel 16. IGY Savannah Harbor Marina asks boaters to switch to Channel 72 for docking instructions once contact is made.
What islands can I visit by boat from Savannah?
Popular boat-accessible destinations include Daufuskie Island, Little Tybee Island, Wassaw Island, Shark Tooth Island, and Ossabaw Island, along with Hilton Head's Harbor Town about 45 minutes up the ICW.
Thinking about waking up to this view instead of just visiting it? If life on the water is more than a weekend idea for you, I'd love to talk through what that could actually look like in Savannah.
