Victorian District

Victorian District

The Savannah Victorian District sits just south of the Historic District, between Gwinnett Street and Anderson Lane, from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to East Broad Street. Most homes were built between 1870 and 1910, many with wood frames, porches and decorative trim. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and includes the southwest corner of Forsyth Park.

Living in Savannah's Victorian District

The Victorian District grew up after the Civil War, when a streetcar line opened in 1869 and builders followed it south from the old city. Instead of Oglethorpe's squares, the streets run on a simple grid, and each house has a small front garden between the sidewalk and the street.

The architecture is the draw: Queen Anne and Late Victorian homes with deep porches, bay windows, gingerbread trim and tall ceilings. The famous Gingerbread House stands at 1921 Bull Street.

Why buyers and investors look here

  • Walk to Forsyth Park. Homes on the district's northern blocks are a few minutes' walk from the park and the Saturday Forsyth Farmers Market.
  • Two-family homes. Many Victorian-era houses were built or later divided as duplexes, so buyers can collect rent from both units or live in one and rent the other.
  • Room to grow. Ongoing restoration by owners, local businesses and Historic Savannah Foundation continues to change the neighborhood block by block.

Featured listing: 316 W Duffy Street, a 5-bed, 2-bath historic duplex two blocks from Forsyth Park, built in 1900, with two separate units and long-term tenants in place. For more on the blocks around the park, read my buyer's guide to living near Forsyth Park.
